As a part of our SEED Exhibition, Ruth Waterhouse will help you create a lovely flower made from spare fabrics.
Join Fabricate artist Ruth to make flowers from fragments of fabrics which may be added to the Vine of Hope and Change in the SEED exhibition if you like. All materials supplied.
At the end of the session, you will have your own individual piece to take home or add to the exhibition on the Vine of Hope and Change.
Ruth Waterhouse - I am Ruth Waterhouse from Seascale. I am an Illustrator and designer. I did a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at the University of Cumbria and then went on to University of Portsmouth where I gained a degree in Illustration. I use a variety of mediums including textiles to create art.
I have created embroideries that are framed in embroidery hoops. Two embroideries are on plum coloured fabric that I hand dyed in an experiment where all the fabric turned plum even though there were other colours for the fabric to choose from. Sea, Stars and Jellyfish is a night time scene with stars above the sea and jellyfish in the sea. Sea and Sky in Pink and Blue represents a stormy sky and rain with a rough sea, with pink and blue threads.
The other embroideries are on parts of a large damask table cloth that was rescued by my Mum from St. Cuthbert’s church hall. The table cloth must have been used for many a soup lunch and harvest supper.
So when I start an embroidery I might have an idea of what I want to create but some of the time I will start with a stitch and see what adventures the thread would like to go on. My usual subject matter is flowers and trees but during the the course of creating this collection of hoops I discovered that I
really enjoy depicting water in thread.
