The Egremont Red project will celebrate Florence Paintmakers, a micro business within Florence Arts Centre based on the site of a former iron ore mine at the heart of West Cumbria’s Priority Place. https://www.florenceartscentre.com/florence-paintmakers
We make a range of art materials using Cumbrian minerals, including iron ore (Egremont Red) from the site, which are sold online, wholesale and at the arts centre and are prized by creatives wishing to portray stories of Cumbrian people and landscapes. The business represents a living legacy for the iron and steel industry, which once dominated the area, and for local people who were employed at Florence (until 2007) and other mines in the area.
As part of this projects, we are commissioning artists to create new work for an exhibition called Ground5.
Open Call
We are commissioning 4 regionally significant artists to work with or respond to Florence Paintmakers products and share their practice with local people through an exhibition at Florence Arts Centre and an accompanying programme of events.
We are looking for professional artists that want to experiment and extend their practice to develop new innovative work in response to the subject matter. This could be how they use the Paintmakers materials, reflect on the paintmaking process or the history of the Florence site.
The commission is open to individual artists or collectives in the North West but you must have experience of exhibiting in a professional gallery.

Muncaster Fringe Artist Call Out
Florence Arts Centre (FAC) is inviting visual artists to submit proposals on the theme of Nature’s Pace to co-create a temporary, innovative new installation during a 5 day residency for Muncaster Fringe Festival plus an opportunity to display some of their own previous relevant work.
Textiles will be represented elsewhere in the Festival, so we would prefer to focus on another medium for this installation.
This will be part of a programme of events running throughout August. The co-creation will take place across 5 days (preferably consecutive days) somewhere between 17th – 28th August, working with invited groups and visiting individuals.
Fees: £1200 to include fees for 5 days of co-creation on site £400 materials fee

It’s an exciting time to get involved with Florence Arts as we head into a major capital development to both improve the way we serve local communities and increase the sustainability of the business. We are looking for committed and community-minded individuals to join our Board of Directors for a 3 year term and help to guide our small but ambitious not for profit business as we continue to grow and make a positive impact in our community.
We’d love to hear from anyone with the passion to help us but we are particularly interested in talking with individuals who also bring experience of project management or the law to oversee the capital project we are undertaking.

Would you like to meet people, share your skills, give a little back to the local community?
Helping out occasionally or doing regular sessions, there are a range of roles which volunteers enjoy at Florence - in the garden, maintaining the building, serving behind the bar or providing tech support for events, serving refreshments, helping with family activities.
