Part of the FREE SCAR Programme
SCAR – cutting through the land exhibition and free creative programme.
Let's explore Earth from Space! Using the European Space Agency Sentinel-2 mission data, images from the Copernicus Browser showing land, ocean and atmospheric monitoring detail can be viewed. 'Scar' Artist, Clare Parker will guide you through the Lake District from above as you embark on a creative journey translating the images onto canvas using the range of Florence Paintmakers materials including raw pigment, Ink, Watercolours and Pastels. Recommended age is 18+.
Before this workshop begins, feel free to book onto our Paintmaking Demonstration to learn more about how we process the iron ore to create our signature Egremont red colour. TICKETS COST £6 and must be booked separately here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/copy-of-copy-of-florence-paintmakers-a-demonstration-of-practices-tickets-1858062698549?aff=oddtdtcreator
Join Nikki and Dave in the paintmaking studio at florence arts centre. The Arts centre is on the site of the former iron ore (haematite) mine. There will be opportunity to have a go yourself and of course ask questions. Friendly and warm atmosphere - a lovely interesting way to spend an afternoon. We will talk you through the method of processing rocks into earth pigments and the different techniques we use to create our watercolour paints and chalk pastels. There will be time for questions at the end.
11 artists working in Cumbria have been commissioned to produce new work and a programme of free activities responding to the theme of ‘SCAR – cutting through the land’ to be held at Florence Arts Centre from 16 November to 22 February 2026.
Some of the artists came together to cocreate the theme, thinking of natural scars in rock or carved by rivers and the scars humans have made across or even below the land like roads, railways and mines. Artists also thought more broadly about the damage we do to the land with litter, erosion and climate control. Artist perspectives vary enormously from images from outer space to human emotion and memory, looking at scars across time from glacial remains to the future of nuclear waste.
Our centre is wheelchair accessible with parking on site, ramped access to the studio door and level throughout. We have an Access toilet.
