IIn the first six months of 2016 a patch of waste ground at the west end of the building was transformed from a rubble-strewn, overgrown no-go area into Egremont's newest green space: the Florence Wildlife Garden.

Work began in the cold and wet February winter, with a team from Lakes College's Stay West - Realising Our Potential scheme in partnership with Florence Arts Centre. The dedication and hard work of the team behind the garden is clear to see... the space is now an oasis not just for humans but also for birds, bugs and visiting wildlife, with a pond, bird and batboxes, a bug mansion, willow borders and willow bird hide and much more. Phase one is now complete and the garden is open to the public during the arts centre opening hours (Wednesday to Sunday, from 11am to 4pm). Come down and discover a secret haven just off the A595, find a spot and relax.

Below you can watch a video and see photos of the making of the garden, featuring some of the hard-working team who have pulled together to create a beautiful and surprising oasis. Come and see the finished results for yourself! Relax and enjoy Florence's Wildlife Garden.

The Wildlife Garden was funded by a generous Green Grant from NUGEN and we were also pleased to receive a donation from Whitehaven Rotary Club. We are grateful to everyone who has made the transformation of this piece of wasteland possible: Sarah-Louise Gibson and the team from Stay West, staff and pupils of Thornhill Primary School, Phil Bradley – Willow Weaver, Helen’s Herbs, Works4You, Nick Hall, Pippa de Gara, Jenni Payne.... and all the many volunteers who have mucked in!
